Technology: Moving On Up

In television programming today, there seems to be more drama happening off-screen than on. While some popular shows received enviable television ratings and market share, there’s no point in denying that in the age of the digital recorder, “must-see TV” is just about over. After digital recording was introduced in the latter ’90s, it was at first a novelty to television spectators who were used to using their VCR and videotapes to record programs when they were never able to watch the first broadcast. Less than ten years later the mixture of DVDs and digital recorder technology has fundamentally rendered the videotape outdated. Add to this the move from analog to digital broadcasting last year and television became decisively entrenched in the age of the time-shifter. With almost a third of the American population using their DVRs, the practice of scheduling events, appointments and activities around beloved television programs has also moved toward retirement. Many satellite and cable providers now offer dvr appliances free with service sign up. And with a little research, savvy shoppers can simply find cable deals on the internet to make the price tag much cheaper. The switch to digital broadcasting forced many television spectators to upgrade their television sets. To experience the benefits that digital television has to supply, upgrading to a HDTV from an analogue set is endorsed. Once extremely pricey, HDTV set prices have dropped recently and often with retailers featuring deals and promotions, that offer heavy savings. The rise of the Net and fast connections has also spawned a generation that’s more obtaining video content through their portables or computers. Many Internet sites offer a wide selection of content for users to peruse at their leisure, no television schedules obligatory. Making the ultimate jump from television spectator to online streaming could require better computer equipment. As well as sufficient bandwidth and a faster web connection, it may be advantageous to check into a hard drive with better processing CPU and satisfactory computer memory as well as larger-sized monitors with quicker refresh rates and higher resolution. Continually improving technology implies memory, monitors and CPU upgrades are cheaper than they once were, never the less it still pays to search out refunds when feasible. Although the times of the family gathering round the television set to watch their favorite prime times shows have gone the way of the Edsel, thanks to increased time shifting flexibility (DVR Technology), programming options from cable broadcasters, and online video streaming, families are watching more television than ever. But thanks to digital video recording or access through your PC, what was “prime time” has become “my time” as spectators set their own television schedules.
