Bringing Green Electricity to the Average Home
The average person doesn’t spend a lot of time comparing power options or doing a scientific study of the pros and cons, coupled with the environmental impact. People with common sense generally want to be good stewards of the earth, but what they pay even more attention to is their electricity bill. In order to bring alternative energy to the masses, a basic requirement has to be cost effectiveness. Luckily, there are several ways to make renewable energy extremely affordable. When that happens, everyone can afford to be an environmentalist.
One of the most simple ways to generate electricity is also the cheapest, and that is solar powered energy. Solar energy can be used on a larger scale, but it is also quite affordable when used in an individual residence. Many homeowners aren’t properly educated about the best way to install solar power in their home. While it is true that the up front cost is higher, it is estimated that the investment usually begins to pay dividends within a year or two. While batteries will eventually have to be replaced as they wear, they battery life is better than ever and warranties guarantee at least a minimum amount of performance after the system is installed. A basic solar system uses solar cells or panels and a storage and generating unit that is small enough to fit an average closet.
Besides solar power, there are more homes than ever being run on wind power. This, again, is completely renewable and earth friendly. Installing a windmill in a backyard isn’t always feasible, though it is possible. However, companies that generate power are beginning to harness wind power more and more. In addition, work is being done to determine the feasibility of using the marine environment as an alternative source of electricity. While determining how to go about it isn’t easy, the bigger challenge is how to make it affordable to the average family.
Even if you don’t use any of the alternative energy that has been discussed, you can still shrink your carbon footprint and save money by conserving electricity. Some basic suggestions include turning down your water heater or installing an on demand, tankless heater. You can also install a wood stove, decreasing the load on your furnace. Finally, basic weather proofing can save significantly on your monthly power bill, which is good for the environment.
