Sol for Earth

Solar energy seems to be rather confusing when it comes to business.  There does not appear to be much logic at this point concerning renewable vs. fossil fuel sources.   The sun showers the earth with far more solar energy than we could possibly use.   Although roughly 30% of solar radiation is reflected by the Earth’s atmosphere, the amount of solar energy that reaches the earth in one year is more than double of what will ever be produced by all fossil fuels on earth combined.  With that much energy available it makes no sense to continue to be so dependent upon fossil fuels.

We are not completely without hope, as there are currently several solar energy power plants that have opened in the US and Europe.  Every year our technology continues to advance and we now have economically viable solar solutions for home power generation that can pay for themselves and even produce enough electricity to feed power back into the grid. Its a huge step in the right direction for our society and there are even newer more exciting things on the horizon.

Advancements in battery technology have opened up the possibility for what was once thought to be completely too far-fetched.  Electric cars.  It is now possible  to make cars that are completely battery powered and can be fueled through solar panels.  Advances in thin coating technologies would eventually allow the entire surface of the car to collect solar energy in addition to the solar panels which would allow for a reduction in the size of the batteries that are used to store power.

Looking even further forward.  Light has momentum, so it has been proposed that solar radiation can be used for propulsion in space.   Although no solar sails have been successfully used, NASA continues to research the technology and to test deployment of solar sails in space.  In theory the solar sail concept could be used for interstellar flight, with the assumption that the sail can be propelled by laser and use ambient solar radiation and gravity for navigation.

The use of solar energy should only increase over time as the technologies continue to advance since dependence on fossil fuels is no longer a viable option.
